Even without the god spot research it would be well understandable for evolution to select those who believed over time, because the belief reduces stress on the system, the system lives slightly longer, voila over time you have a majority of believers. You can also see in drug research how people trigger these chemicals that produce the cosmic consciousness experiences, and then interpret these experiences as a direct contact with a higher consciousness. One of the fascinating things about Persingers research is that when you have these experiences as a god believer, you believe you are experiencing god directly, as an atheist it will be a gaia type organic non-personal consciousness, and if you believe in aliens you will experience being probed.
