Really we are treading on thin ice here. Talking about the Bible is always an invitation to catastrophe on this forum. So I'll be brief. You of all people should know allegory when you see it I should think. John is the most allegorical of all the gospels. My version of your quote, John 1-5 goes: "The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it."

I think it must be as clear as the light of day that John is using light to refer to the coming of Christ as a metaphor as in"the true light that enlightens every man was coming into the world" John 1-9

John also refers to Christ as shepherd, bread, water and a bunch of other stuff. How does that shepherd technique go again? I don't think I want to know.
