The poetry really was terrible. Vogon quality.

I remember after a surprisingly long session in Brighton walking along the beach trying to resurrect 'lila' as a possible excuse but it didn't help. I went to one more event and that was it.

'Myself I feel content and open as a pod
For you see my friend, I've been close to God.'

I think a pod is by default closed, unless it is described as open?

How old was he when he wrote this? 6? If my kids had come up with something like this I'd have been keen to get across the point that poetry is very much more than making the words at the end of lines rhyme. It's a start I suppose but move on!!

Actually, now I remember when I was seven I wrote:

Pink are elephants, pink and green.
They wear tight trousers which glow...

My mother helped me out with ' with sheen'.

It was one of a 'collection' (haha) I wrote at the time. We'd been given the task at school of writing to someone famous. The teacher would send some letters to the famous people. I chose the first in the list Auden. W.H.

So a year later I received a letter from the man himself apologising for the delay as he had been on a world tour and my letter has been forwarded very many times. He wrote a couple of pages (hand writing) critiquing each poem making suggestions for improvement and encouraging me to read more. He was more than generous. Haven't written any poetry since, but that's not W.H's fault.

I'm guessing no-one laughed when Rawat showed them that poem, and no one dared point out his ignorance.

As for poetry, so with science, philosophy, scripture and taste.
Fifteen years of my life what a waste.
