With TM of course.

Here's another cult problem for the books.   That religious idiot David Lynch is giving money to any American public school that will sponsor classes in transcendental meditation.  The first school that received a grant, of $175,000!, had to return the money when parents found out about i t.  The claims made by Lynch and other TMer's are ridiculous, especially this claim that children who repeat their TM mantra every day will recover from clinical depression.

The topic line question about children and depression is taken directly from the David Lynch Foundation website.

But the first question for Mr. Lynch is: why TM, and not some other meditation technique?  All the meditation techniques marketed by gurus are essentially the same, only packaged differently in order to propagate their own cults.  Sri Sri Ravi Shankar has the best technique, not it's Kriya Yoga technique from Yogananda, no, its Shakti Yoga from GuruMayi, no, it's Knowledge from Marharaji, no, its....

Yeah, they all want to do propagation.  I found this article at Cult News Net:

Parent storms stage to protest TM program at Terra Linda High
Thank goodness for apostates!

I get so angry when cults try the "we are not a religion" crap. They try to get around the separation of church and state with that. No new age crap belongs in public school any more than any other religion.

The comment the one parent made that her son was too smart to join a cult just burned me. Yes, only us dummies ever joined a cult lady.I

Or one of the sad things: clinically speaking, some of the basic meditation techniques out there, like relaxation breathing, mental focus and even positive visualization and self-talk, can actually have benefits for people with depression.

So can exercise, watching funny movies, and just talking to nice people (hi, ya'll).

But when it gets really f***ed up is when people put their hooks into the thing: food becomes bait.

P.S. why does it cost $175,000 to teach meditation to schoolkids? Send one teacher to a training...how hard can it be? Red flag...

Reading between the lines it seems that what David Lynch was offering was not $175,00 in cash to the school to be spent on whatever they wanted and free TM "training" (where have I heard the word before?) but $175,000 worth of TM training so that even if the money was paid up front the TM organisation would get it all back and then be able to donate it to another school, and another school and a few or more children would end up in the cult. And who is deciding the price of the TM training? TM!

I have a friend, an old surfer, who has been using TM for decades and finds it helpful in life. Releasing the tension on the bow is how he described it once but he says anything to do with the Maharishi is always about one thing: money.

Mind you, the Maharishi is about 90 years old so TM might have significant health benefits compared to Rawatism because the two greatest exponents of Rawatism, the eldest and youngest brothers Rawat share an astonishing obesity problem and only the miracles of modern medicine are going to see them through many more decades.

I remember when satellite satsang was going to be the next big thing and propagation wold really take off now that there'd be no more need for public meetings but premies could invite people into their homes to see Rawat on satellite TV at 11am on Sunday morning. Didn't happen! Now many premies in Australia have useless satellite dishes and settop boxes in their homes. At the time I could make a quick snap judgement about the relative success of TM and EV. EV could afford an hour a week of satelite time and TM could afford 168 hours a week of satellite time and could actually fill it (though there was much fluff) because in TM there are people who are allowed to speak publicly about TM.

The real issue is that there's no empirical reason to believe it doesn't increase, rather than diminish, clinical depression in the long run.  I mean, alcohol is pretty good at decreasing short run depression.  So is heroine.
