I think a lot of it was bait and swich. 

Knowledge was presented as "try it you'll like it" and "Guru will show you God."

Then, for some reason, for years, all Rawat seemed to talk about was that we must surrender completely to him.  This is the part of Rawat's history that when premies are reminded, they just look blankly, like that robot on "lost in space" that just said, "this does not compute."  I think they actually respress it and don't remember it.  It's just astrounding to read and remember.  A total megalomaniac, Mr. Rawat is.
