Here's the story.  Rawat was coming to UC Berkeley in 2003, so I thought I might go.  It was a program that was advertised as being open to anyone, as it was a public, introductory event.  Well, that was a big lie, let me tell you.

The cult at that point was even charging "non-pwks" to attend, I think ten bucks, but apparently it wasn't a "required" payment.  I guess they wouldn't keep guestsout if you didn't pay, or so I had heard, but I had in fact received knowledge, but as I didn't want to support Rawat with money, I sent an email to the people handling the event to see if I could get in without paying, despite technically being a "pwk."

Here is the nice email I got back:

Dear Mr. Whalen,

If you would like to pre-register, but as a guest for $10, you may register during the second phase of registration which begins April 23rd. Or if you know someone who is registering in phase one, you could register as a guest and sit with them by using their password and email address. Registration explains the process. Or you may register on-site for $10 or elect to pay nothing. Whatever you feel to do. The event is open to everyone. I hope this has helped. If not, let me know.

Thanks, Betsy, Guest Services

So, I thought, okay, this is nice.  I emailed Betsy back and thanked her. I thought, well, great, they are being civilized, maybe I will goI also posted on the Forum that I was planning on going to the event.  I mean, I was living part time in Berkeley anyhow, so it wasn't a big deal.

A premie who apparently reads the Forum then emailed me and said that he would take me as his "guest" and pay the fee.  I said great.  I guess he asked EV about it, or somehow they figured out that me, the notorious ex-premie was planning on going.  They told him he couldn't bring me.  Then, I got this email from Elan Vital withdrawing the one "Betsy" had sent me earlier.

Dear Mr. Whalen:

Your email to guest services was forwarded to Elan Vital. The response sent to you on April 18, 2003 concerning your inquiry about the event in Berkeley was based upon incomplete information and must be rescinded. The person handling your alleged "inquiry" about attending the event was unaware of the wide range of hostile actions you have taken for the sole purpose of interfering with the stated goals of Elan Vital and with the lives of the people that follow Prem Rawat’s teachings. These behaviors, which have been repeatedly laced with overt hostility, indicate that your interests are contrary to the purpose of the event.

Because your behavior establishes reasonable grounds to believe that your attendance presents a legitimate threat to our right to hold an orderly and peaceful gathering, you may not attend the event. If you register online, your registration fee will be refunded and if you attempt to attend the event using fraudulent means, you do so at your own peril of the full force of the law.

Elan Vital PR

So, you see I have apparently engaged in "hostile actions" and I have been "interfering ....with the lives of people that follow Rawat's teachings," and that all this has been "laced with overt hostility."  Heavy stuff, no?

But as usual, Elan Vital's paranoid hatefulness backfired.  The fact that a former member was being banned from a public event on a University campus, peaked the interest of the University newspaper and they printed a story that was not flattering to Mr. Rawat or his cult.  The email is actually quoted in the article.
