look I'm sorry but I have actually reached a state of confusion now.

I thought I had a handle on it.  On the one side is positive thinking - it goes something like if I wear a mask I am joining in the mass fear outbreak and so I must stand against it.  And on the other side it is evidence based science - the conclusion being high rates of vaccination is our best bet.

So then I get told by a fully vaccinated professional in medical circles source that South America where it was such a complete disaster and no vaccines or any way to slow or stop it has turned a corner and is 'over the virus' is this even true?  Is this proving Donald Trump had the right idea, shock shock horror!!!

am I accidentally hearing more conspiracy theory stuff?

I think that you are drawing the wrong conclusion based on the apparent decline of the virus in South America.

There will be surges and declines of the virus.

No, Trump had/has it all wrong. Millions have died. Isn't that enough proof?

yes you are right, Drek, the millions of dead are enough proof Trump had it wrong.  I was writing the post and had the thought and it struck me as so funny I couldn't think any more but a bit later I remembered how the debate went - Trump, let's let her rip and keep the economy open.  Other people, the economy won't keep open anyway as all the dead and dying will clog it up.  and hey why not try something a bit more humane like vaccination first.

Back in the 80's any evening if you went outside here, the grass would be jumping with cane toads.  We were all talking about how to stop the spreading plague of toxic toads, they are spawn of Satan horrible.  They were deliberately introduced to Australia to eat the beetles in the sugar cane fields.  and were spreading further and further South, it looked like they were going to take over the whole country and at one point they talked about bringing in a highly toxic viper who likes eating them.  Thank God they decided against that!  (They = CSIRO who were our government backed bastion of quality science at the time) anyway the point is nothing could be done about them, deep in the rainforest there are probably frogs that have gone extinct thanks to the cane toad without ever being counted by us.  but it was obvious we were losing a lot of nice little frogs to these horrible ugly toads and getting grossed out in the process, I don't know what it is, they are ugly as sin, anyway methods went from the more humane - into the freezer, to using them for golf practise.  Nothing worked and I don't think smoking their cured skin could have been that great as it didn't catch on.  Some Queensland children made pets of them, this is despite the poisonous gland on their back, impressive isn't it.  And they grew huge, like dinner plates.

Where are they now?  still here, not so much of an issue any more, well I don't know for sure about Queensland but here the numbers have dropped dramatically and I think it's across the board.  I don't know why exactly, there are some creatures that managed to learn how to eat them without dying, flip them on their back and avoid the poisonous gland.  I don't know that that's the whole story though.  It's fascinating, how did it happen.  anyway so the parallel to the virus is the spread to an open area - the virus found us humans and the cane toads found Australia and they have gone from big sized ones jumping around on the lawn to small sized and largely hidden.  and I wish the virus would do the same thing but I just have this feeling it's going to be one plague after another anyway.

yes they are horrible.  I have just done a check and it is a mystery as to why they are declining but it is acknowledged including Queensland.  CSIRO has ruled out possible causes, parasitism, lack of water or food, the weather.  one suggestion is that they are reverting to their normal status from where they came from in South America.  They killed off 90% of the big goannas in their hey day in Brisbane.  Isn't that shocking.  one day there is 100 goannas roaming the streets and eating the little frogs and then there were only 10.

Looks like we are coming out of lockdown here today.  but border still closed.

It's interesting that in Australia you still have the notion of lockdown at all. I do understand the need for it. It's an important tool.

But here in the US lockdown is no longer an option or a tool to use to slow or stop the virus. We've opened the floodgates and opened everything up and we will never be able to close down again because of the nasty and science ignorant politics.

Sure, we had that bright and shiny moment when the vaccines came out and we thought it was all done with. Yet, the anti-vaxxers and DELTA have thrown all of our naive hope down the toilet and our numbers are as bad as during the worse days before the vaccines. Go figure!

Our premier has been talking up the vaccines big and promising an end to lockdown for some time now.  I see a bit of the news yesterday and there is a record number of new cases - over 1500 in NSW and hey who needs lockdown, it's been lifted the same day.  where's the sense in that.

where's the sense in expecting any sense.

at the moment it's pretty okay though, lockdown has been opened up but the borders are still closed and all the social distancing and maximum visitors etc is still in place.  with any hope we won't go to opening the floodgates here because border closures work so successfully.  It's Sydney and Melbourne that have significant numbers of cases.  So far, touch wood, the rest of the country has been able to contain any outbreaks with contact tracing and quarantining.  we are all gloomy about the prospects though, thinking it will spread everywhere here too.

there was this news item, a woman had got on a coach to go from Sydney to Kempsey and by the time she got there she was met with a van and they took her and her two children, the other passengers and the driver off to quarantine for two weeks.  I keep wondering how did they know she was positive?  oh I suppose someone ratted on her.
