More than 125 Covid-19 cases tied to South Texas church camp, pastor says

This is depressing and unnecessary if you think about it. In the US I believe that anyone over the age of 12 can get a vaccination shot. But, here in the US we've got a major anti-vax movement, mostly amongst Republicans, that is keeping vaccination levels well below the needed 75% to achieve herd immunity.

Thanks Donald Trump and our patriotic and ignorant Republicans. Or is it stupid Republicans?

Either way, all the people who refuse to get vaccinated will be virus factories that will allow the virus to mutate into something even more transmissable and deadly.

Here's some of the juicy quotes:

More than 125 campers and adults who attended a summer camp run by a South Texas church have tested positive for coronavirus, according to a statement from Clear Creek Community Church Lead Pastor Bruce Wesley.

The outbreak stems from a late June Student Ministry Camp for sixth through 12th graders that was attended by over 400 people, he said.

"Unfortunately, upon return from camp, 125+ campers and adults reported to us that they tested positive for COVID-19. Additionally, hundreds more were exposed to COVID-19 at camp," Wesley said.

"And hundreds of others were likely exposed when infected people returned home from camp."

"This is a reminder that COVID-19 is still here, and we have to take precautions," Dr. Philip Keiser, Galveston County Local Health Authority, said in the county statement.

We are told we need 85% for herd immunity. At the rate of immunisation we've been doing, that'll be reached in September. However, Boris and his cronies have decided to drop all legal restrictions next week. Currently, we only have a requirement to wear masks in shops and on public transport, and to self-isolate if you come into contact with a covid infected person. Life is close to normal, we're used to the pesky masks, and isolating seems a better option than running around passing on the infection (though it is nowhere near well enough supported). But still, they're going to drop all the restrictions. It's amazing and disheartening. There'll be more deaths, but many more cases of long covid amongst the young.

My kid's just qualified as a doctor. He caught covid in hospital in January. It was only like a bad flu for him, but even now, his oxygen levels are lower than they ought to be. Many other young people won't get off so lightly. It seems likely that for some of these people, they'll be permanently disabled.

oh, I'm sorry to hear that John.  glad to hear he has largely recovered and I hope he makes a full recovery with time.

I don't understand what makes Boris lift restrictions too early again.  We're in lockdown for another week again and there aren't any cases up here but no one is complaining.

I like it.  It makes me feel more normal.

My percentage for herd immunity was just an optimistic guess, but, yes, I think that 85% is a more realistic number.

Here in the US, it's pretty much wide open with the exception of public transportation. However, many of the red (Republican) states are at only a 30 to maybe 40 percent vaccination rates. The TV people are saying that there will be COVID surges in those states.

Yes, long term effects are pretty scary. Yet, people, the dumb ones, just don't care or know.

Singapore opened up with 59% immunised I saw on the news.  They are well and truly primed to do contact tracing though.  They also think their hospital system can cope.

As far as I understand, people who get covid what they want to say is that it was really bad.  Even when they get full recovery they are saying it is something you don't want to get.

Here in Australia they have got the pro-vaxx campaign going well - we are only at 30% here, but it is set to climb.  what they are saying is that people who have been exposed to the virus after vaccination have either not got it or got milder symptoms.

I don't think we have any cases up here but over a hundred new cases yesterday in NSW, the threat has become more real.

we like our masks now, lots more being worn.

they got this scary ad going too, a young woman struggling to breathe, and so now it turns out that the reason people haven't got vaccinated is because the vaccine is not yet available to cover the people waiting for it.  bit unfair really, why do the scary ad now when there isn't vaccine available for young folk?

I have thought my way through the vaccine thing personally.  Having read my way through those links I have to conclude the likelihood of shock is very high for me.  so I have thought it through and have to accept that I am not going to get the vaccine, my whole being refuses to go there - it's literally not an option.

so I don't like the scary ad either.

Lesley,

You should really consult your doctor about getting the vaccine.

Here in the US, they give you the shot and then make you sit in a room that is monitored by a nurse for 30 minutes to see if you goes has a reaction and if you do they treat it.

yeah, they have that here too I imagine.  I wouldn't get as far as the room, it would be better to hook me up to the life support system first.

since writing that post I have been thinking well what if a friend could drive me there, I'd already be in a state of nervous collapse....think about that for a while - I much prefer my plan to become a hermit!

well at the moment it hasn't come to that.  and I am hoping that it doesn't.

it was bad enough with the contrast dye, the vaccine might be a bridge too far.

The US stock market just dropped 725 points today due to a number of factors that include the increase in COVID-Delta infections.

So, here we are after that brief amount of happy time where we (the US) thought we had it beat. Well, no more. All the unvaccinated idiots are going to mess this up for everyone. Thanks, people.

And then in reality, the virus is still rampant in many other countries. So, no, we're nowhere near done with this.

And the Olympics. What a stupid thing to do to try to have them in a country that really doesn't want them due to being in a COVID emergency.

So, it's a little more of a problem than some church group summer camp with kids getting blown out by the virus. There's a long, long way to go and we're probably not even gonna get there anyway. So, fuck it all! We're all gonna die.

P.S. And there is that little Climate Change problem that just wiped out Belgium and western Germany. Nope, climate change is not caused by mankind according the same deniers of the vaccine and the virus. Thanks GOP buttholes.

yes, it's this Delta variant that's doing the trick.  We've got it here and despite the lockdowns there's always someone wanting to share it with the regional areas.

The latest case I heard is an hour up the road from here, so thankfully still not in the area but getting a bit close and anyway we are a very popular destination for people wanting to escape the city lockdowns.  Our premier was on the telly saying it's got us beat unless people adhere to the lockdowns and contact tracing.

The trouble with the vaccine here is there aren't many supplies, not sure why this has happened but people are upset about it.

So I am in the early morning sunshine on the verandah, I have moved chairs to allow my cat to sit on my chair.  She's a very sympathetic cat but she does have a secretly sunny view of the corona virus.  From her point of view I am home more, it's quieter in general and we can get all the best fish again seeing as it isn't being shipped overseas - a nice bit of tuna seems to colour her view.

My plans for hermit life are underway. well, nothing's changed, except I have learned how to buy things online.  But I am sorting myself out to be on the pension and not do rentals and happy about that.
