Hyenas dragged a man from his bed and mauled him to death

Oh, please God, I know that one day I will die, but please not by hyenas.

Here's some of the juicy quotes:

(CNN)An elderly man has been killed by a pack of hyenas in Zimbabwe, after they pulled him from his bed while he was sleeping.

The man, who has been identified by the authorities as 87-year-old Tendai Maseka, was dragged about 1,000 feet from his mud and wood hut.

The incident occurred on Monday night in the rural region of Chirumanzu. in central Zimbabwe.
By the time Maseka's body was discovered by villagers, its lower half was missing.

might not be so bad.  depends where they bite first!  and I think you can hope the shock will fill you full of endorphins.

might be better than some of these godawful drawn-out deaths from medical interventions.

Ok, I'll try another.

My dad walks into the barber shop. There's three hairs on his head.

He sits in the chair and the barber says how would you like it. My dad says, give me a short back and sides.

So the barber trims the hairs, puts one on one side, and one at the back and just as he's combing the last one, it falls out.

The barber says, terribly sorry sir, but one of your hairs has fallen out.

My dad says, oh well, then just give me a trim and a nice parting.

So the barber cuts the hairs to equal lengths, puts one to one side and just as he's combing the other to the other side, it falls out.

The barber says, terribly sorry, but another of your hairs has fallen out. What would you like me to do?

My dad leaps from the chair, angry. No, forget it, I'll leave it messy.

Ok, let's start over. This thread is about a man who gets eaten by hyenas.

Tell us or share with us your feelings about this sad story, please?

I couldn't believe you hadn't heard that old joke before. You got on the ride when I wasn't expecting any passengers.

I like hyenas. They need to eat too...

He was a racist. He left occupied Denmark to join the British army and fight the Nazis, so there was some logic to his persistent hatred of Germans and Japanese. Oddly, Jews were always suspect, and I grew up suspicious myself, not knowingly encountering any. (On leaving home, my best friends over the next 10 or more years were Jews...)

When he emigrated to Australia, he hated aboriginals, and kept a loaded gun by the bed in case any stepped on his bit of Australia. He seemed to regret that none actually came close enough.

Then it was Muslims of course.

In the end, I phoned him and he didn't answer, and after a couple more attempts, I sent a neighbour to check. No answer except from the dog. I sent the police, who found him in a shopping centre in his pyjamas, raving. He had to be restrained to be taken to hospital, where he demanded to have only white nurses and doctors.

In hospital he was violent, so he was chemically restrained. He died in a week or so, sedated by the Indian-sounding doctor I talked to on the phone, and looked after by Philopena nurses.

No passengers, no family, no friends, full of anger and hatred.

Death by hyena surely isn't the worst way to go.

wow, John, what a story.  I hope there was some comfort there for him in some way.  and good for you getting him into care.

my elderly cat is on her last legs, she has moved out under the mango tree and you can tell her legs are sore but she only sleeps in the nest I have made for her when it is raining so she gets damp every night.  she is having a great time despite the sore legs, she is happy, she is a great companion though a bit of a pest in only wanting to eat outside so now we have have ravens currawongs cane toads and blowies mobbing her food dishes.

My father (Jewish) died in an Australian hospital bed family around him and a (white, local, country type) nurse who fed him when he wanted it despite the nil by mouth instructions.  He wouldn't have minded a filipino nurse, he had a way of appealing to people's better instincts so they looked after him but he still had to die in the middle of the night.

just want to add - I have been thinking about how my mum died and all that and I think maybe the way it is wherever or however it happens, internally speaking we die in the arms of those who love us.

My father was a narcissist and pretty horrible to me but he was still my father and I know I felt him, internally speaking at the end.

It ain't black and white.

As a teenager I found him once beating my mother. Suddenly all those times she said she'd walked into a door took on new meaning.

He was often a bully, but when she got Alzheimer's, he looked after her incredibly patiently and persistently. Maybe she stopped being a threat? I don't know, but I think she couldn't have had better care the last year's of her life.

yeah, if black and white make grey then grey makes a lot of different pictures.  and then there are pictures hidden in pictures.

When my mother had a stroke and ended up back home in a wheelchair he just loved it, she was like a baby, wide open, trusting and unable to move away from him, he was triumphant.  Plus he got community pats on the back.

He was very possessive, chasing his children away and even following her into the bathroom when the community nurse came to bathe her.  That was his undoing - the nurse started locking the door against him and talking with my mum and slowly she realised how much he was bullying her.

He was very attentive.  If he not been so ignorant of her he would have made an excellent carer but he didn't actually care about her or her needs at all.  he was the same with me growing up and he was no better with his sons.  It was like we didn't show up on his reality map other than as tools for his use.
He never accessed or expressed a father's love for his children - it was there in him whether he liked it or not, and he didn't like it - it wasn't until he lay dying and his will power could not control his limbs that his limbs were able to move into wanting to hug me.
