I remember our parents generation debating that one a lot.  It took a tumble with the advances in scientific knowledge about genetics.  As it should.

We have no trouble saying oh he inherited his nose from his father or even he's got the same quick temper as his father but when it comes to nice or nasty it's all back up for grabs.  Why?

Do we really think people have a choice in that?

An element of the charm narcissistic people have is the 'broken wing' effect - like the birds who nest on the ground and the mother will shuffle along pretending to have a broken wing as a distraction to lead the predator away from her nest.

'Look at me, I'm so cute, I am just damaged by my upbringing', but it's a deliberately crafted distraction - while you are busy trying to bandage their wing you are not paying attention to what they are taking from you.

So yes, though I completely agree outcomes and behaviours are massively affected by circumstance, I think it helps to remember the person that is making sense of it all is always who they are.
