I have known at least three people like that. Not sure really if I can diagnose them, but all were very manipulative. One especially seemed like a kind of psychopath. And one thing I realised in retrospect is that they all very quickly talked about their messed up childhood. Inappropriately so I would say. So my cautionary tale is if someone starts very quickly to tell you about their bad childhood, be suspicious.

The one I can talk a bit about. She worked for me. First of all she was brilliant and incredibly charming. The big red flag for me was when she so easily lied about something when we were visiting a customer. It freaked me out really and it was totally unnecessary. I wouldn't have even realised it if she hadn't told me. She assumed I had picked up on it and was explaining why she did it.

She went on to create one after another of fake tech startups and promote herself with the most outlandish of credentials and titles. If you have seen the Netflix series about Anna Delvey, well that was pretty much her. She was scary but also really fun to hang around with. Just keep her out of your wallet.

So this was my first personal experience with this kind of sociopath fraudster. And yes she did rip me off a bit, but not so much. It has made me very wary since.
