Hi Cynthia and everyoneBy linking directly to theTrailer.org website in your post, then anyone who clicks on the link can have their IP address seen by the admin of that site. It is preferable to download the image, and upload it into your post. This is best practice for any links in any post - either link only to sites you know and trust, or for images download them first and then upload into your PRT Forum post. -- Mike

Just out of interest Mike, what does having access to one's IP address allow the accessor (if that's a word) to do with the info? - and what info does such access typically give them? I could be asking the same question twice there. Then again ...

If you want to remove the pix and the link, feel free. Time's expired for me to edit.

Hi Mike, Like cq I'm a bit puzzled. Are you saying if you go to that link from another web page they'll know your IP address, as opposed to when you go to the site from your Explorer address bar? And, even if that is the case, I don't understand why it matters if they can trace my machine, or even my name, date of birth and sexual preferences via my IP, if they've really nothing better to do. Presumably any other web-page I access on the average day can do the same. So is there a specific danger here? Nige

I don't understand why it matters if they can trace my machine, or even my name, date of birth and sexual preferences via my IPIt is a personal decision whether it matters or not. I agree that for most people it does not matter. But for some people it is does matter, as a fair amount of personal info can be gleaned from IP addresses, and since the image is linked to an Elan Vital related site, I think that the warning is in order. Cynthia, there is no need to delete your post or link. I think that my notification is enough for anyone who is sensitive to potentially giving their IP address to a premie-related site. -- Mike

Thanks, Mike, But my main question was is there a specific danger here, ie., if you go to the site from another web page, as opposed to just going there by, say, knowing the web address, are you revealing more sensitive information? There was enough intriguing stuff in Cynth's post to make me visit the site regardless of whether she posted a direct link or not. Basically, does it matter which route you take to get there?

I don't think people should get overly paranoid about this, but if you want to be a little more careful, you could cut and paste the link into your browser address field. This way the admin wouldn't know that you were coming from PRT, if that is an issue.
Typically there is a log of visitors which is kept for a while. It doesn't mean that the admin will look at it, but it is there on most servers. They can find out where visitors came from (the site they clicked from if any), their ip adress, what browser and os they have. What screen resolution. Not much more.
There are ways of extracting more info out of windows os computers, but that is really a whole different situation and probably not the case on that website.
