So, essentially, "elan vital" is that spark which causes an inanimate object to become animated. This, initiated by a jolt of electricity, is what caused the monster Frankenstein to come to life, right?

Hmmmm, what a strange choice of name.

"Hmmmm, what a strange choice of name."

This reminds me of some thoughts I had on my last Anth inspired walkabout in Glastonbury.

I stood atop the Tor and reflected on all that had passed in the 37 yrs. since I last stood there free.

I read the plaque on the wall within.

That church with no roof has had no abbot since the last one was hung there in the 13th century. It is, as it were, the spiritual heart of English hippies, pagans, druids, and anarchists. It stands more as a symbol of rebellion, even atheism, or an unspoken, creedless, new age, ley line sort of spirituality.

It was an odd choice of site to pick for Maharaji's first appearance in the West

But clearly he planned to rope in all the hippies first, as they were more impressionable, clean them up, and use them to rope in the rest.

The 'spark' is one way it's described although the term seems to have orginated with the philosopher Henri Bergson who intended it (not necessarily literally) in the sense of 'life force' - a sort of 'first cause' in evolution. It can also sometimes be used in the sense of the 'ghost in the machine'.

Why was it used to re-name Divine Light Mission ? - ask a premie and get a blank look - or maybe some tale about how it came to Rawat in a dream. You certainly will not get a discussion about Bergson, philosophy or evolution because cult meaning is not common meaning so Rawat's Elan Vital is different to everyone elses - except that is when it suits premies for it to be the same thing.
