Hi Joe, I'm wondering if this mightn't be a US/British English problem. As an Australian I'd also describe most of GHi's post as "sounding reasonable". This is quite a different thing to "being reasonable" and carries a connotation of actually not being reasonable at all. It's much more obvious when spoken as the voice intonation with which the phrase is mostly spoken varies the meaning from grudging acceptance to outright disbelief. |
