Chaucer and a few other proto-reformationists brilliantly parodied church officials and their extortion rackets. See, in Chaucer's 'General Prologue' - the Monk, the Friar, the Pardoner, and the Summoner. The divinely ordained had it really easy in those days, the church were indisputably the top knobs. 'The Friar's Tale' tells of, what must have been for many a much hoped for, revenge. |
