If and when I get old

I don’t want people to treat me like I need some special care, consideration or respect just because I’m old.

I want to be interested in people and engaged with them.

I want to be doing a special, fairly vigorous exercise routine so that I’m strong, supple and have good stamina.

I don’t want any annoying aches and pains.

I want to be on a diet of super foods so I have all the right nutrition ---good for the body and good for the mind/brain.

I want scientists to get cracking sorting out gene therapy, and all sorts of other stuff, so that their work ( along with the exercise and diet) will effectively make me feel 15 to 20 years younger. An added bonus would be to also look 15 to 20 years younger too, ho hum.

I want to be reading, thinking, watching, listening, moving, playing for my entire life till I kick the proverbial bucket.

I don’t want to be constantly thinking about my mortality and wondering when I’m going to die.

I might decide to devote half a day or a full day once every 6 months, or once a year, to thinking about dying but never think of it otherwise.

I want lots of other things too.

I don’t want lots of other things too.

Maybe I’ll officially consider myself old in 20 years time when I’m approaching 80 but I might leave it for 30 years instead. Assuming I reach 60 and beyond, of course.

I don’t want to look at a vid such as this interview with Lenny and feel slightly depressed and thinking what an arsehole the interviewer is for dwelling on death so much.

If someone thinks I’m an expert on death and dying because I’m old and ask me questions about it I want to reply “ Well, I can’t tell you right now as I haven’t died yet. Besides, maybe you’ll die before me.”

Vids a bit long ...could seem boring depending on what mood you're in.

He's a one is Leonard. At 21 mins 35 secs ....just after talking about past anxieties/depressions he starts elaborating on the writing process in the face of political correctness and stuff ...and getting beyond slogans....beyond gender politics, environmental politics etc, etc.

As one who has had a brush with death, my impression...

well, I can't say it.  I was going to say something about the death of Neda Soltani, but I realized that I don't actually know, and don't want to.

I thought Obama's statement today about Iran was just fine in terms of not antagonizing the Iranian Army, which is about the only Iranian institution that could pull this up short before it becomes a nation-sized Amritsar.  But in terms of demonstrating any grasp of what the hell is going on it was ignorant as a bag of rocks.  Which is to say that having a President who's dumb as a post is just fine, as long as people can shush him up at the right time.  As someone once said, people might think you're an idiot if you keep your mouth shut, but that's better than opening it and removing all doubt.

Gee, I'm really glad the dolt "respects Iran's sovereignty," as though Iran and its Supreme Thug were one and the same.  And I'm sure the protestors are relieved that Obama won't be invading Tehran, or sending any arms or ammo to a counter-revolution, any time soon.

Whew, that was close!

Very laudable Dermot - I wish you luck, and I'm sure all that positive thinking will help to keep you well!

OTOH just in case, if I were you I'd:

a: get to know your GP well and make sure him/her will give you as much morphine as you ask for...

b: find someone who will look after you if you get dementia, so you don't have to go into a home...

More details on request - I looked after my Mum, who died last October, from physical illnesses, and I look after nuns with dementia.

I like that bit - it's not death you need to worry about, it's the preliminaries!
