Hi JHB... well here I am... ready to debate the Islam-GB election issue. You said:

Whereas I still don't think the British people are any more racist than they were, I still maintain that the increased prominence of the clash between Islam and British law and custom is the difference that has got the BNP elected this time (and Nigel, the A of C, speech is just one example).

A of C, for readers here, is the Archbishop of Canterbury, who JHB thinks is complicit in creating a future Islamic Britain (LOL!). JHB is wrong. The reason the BNP got elected (in two constituencies, in 8th, and last, place, with not much more than 100,000 votes each!) is threefold:

a: the turn out was very low, because voters were outraged by the MP expenses scandal.

b: because of the expenses scandal, more people protest voted.

c: people think 'foreigners' are taking our jobs (see the helpful BNP election flier we got posted through our door which stated '80 million Turkish Muslims are going to take our jobs').

Hi Moley ---well, there's no doubt that the BNP is a nasty, inherently racist org, in essence, and it's a pity it won any seats but it did.

I'm not jumping in blind to the discussion at this point but I just want to make a point about how many actually voted for it.

Including the seats it fought for but didn't win, alongside the two Euro seats it won, it got something like 950,000 votes.

Up to Dec 2008 the number of eligible voters for parliamentary seats throughout the UK was 45, 194, 449 people. I thought the figure would be less than that but apparently it isn't. I initially figured those under voting age would comprise of more than 15m or so people but I checked with the Gov Stats office to get the figures.

Whether or not the BNP would put up more candidates in a National election - well - I'm not sure. Possibly it would and probably it'd get even more votes as a result.

Still, let's assume that 1m are prepared to vote for it out of a total electorate of 45m. Obviously nowhere near the whole electorate would vote in any election, but there ya go.

By this very rough & ready measure, though, we arrive at at least 2+% of the electorate prepared to vote BNP.

Just thought I'd fling that in, for what it's worth.

No comment re the debate you're having as of yet ....I'm trying to withdraw again.

However, I've  still got an "  Islamophobic" post to make, though, ( in a separate thread) if I manage to get round to it re some stuff I recently came across.

Yeh. You are right about total BNP votes - I meant (but prob was not clear due to wine consumption ) a little over 100,000 in one constituency. As in here (NW), they (ie Nick Griffin) got about 130,000.

And the Greens got 109,000 ish here - which is a drag, because I know quite a few young folk who didn't vote but would have voted Green.

Anyways Dermot - nice to talk to you  xx

I haven't got the time to get into yet another online discussion group, but if you want to know my opinion on the rise of the BNP, it's a combination of the Labour party having abandoned its natural constituency in favour of the ideas of the metropolitan elite, & yes, the perceived 'otherness' of the muslims hasn't been mitigated over time by their willingness to become assimilated.

When the BNP gets really smart, if that isn't a contradiction in terms, & goes after the black vote, then look out.

In Birmingham the coons hate the pakis even more than whitey does.
