GMJ is likely a Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh wannabe (except for his 20-year sentence for rape a couple of days ago), sort of a colorful yet natural extension of the worst in Guruism.  He certainly seems to have more musical talent that our own personal Lard of the Universe though.  Check this out:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q48tagwurUw

Seems to me that us humans sadly seem to be making a pretty good case for our own extinction as of late (and probably for a pretty long time).  Well, not all of us I suppose.

Mike

BTW TED, this guy does have some innovative ideas you might want to introduce down at the TRAC.

Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh says the same thing over and over again. Where is the artistry there? Compare this crap to the music of Hanslok and Blue Aquarius, and you will quickly realize who the real Lord of Music is.

Just listen to Hanslok singing here roark and you will eat your words. Never diss the Holy Family!

Steve,

You make excellent points.  And I will say it is rare to find such a joyful bunch as is depicted in the Hanslok video, wow!

But, come on now, for godlike artistry, watch this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lN5YXmIz2QI

And the outfits (not to mention the profound tufted shoulder-hair ringlets)!!!  You have to admit this guy is simply astonishing (just too bad I didn't get over there to properly worship him before he went off to jail).  Another missed opportunity now that I really meditate on it....

Have you lost your mind roark? Are you kidding me? These twitching, juvenile delinquents look like they are suffering from Saint Vitus dance. To paraphrase Frank Sinatra, this is one of the most brutal, ugly, degenerate, and vicious forms of expression I have ever seen – it is lewd, sly and dirty – a rancid-smelling aphrodisiac.

Now compare this vulgar cacophony of discordant sound to the regal, melodious, mellow, and resonant renderings of Hanslok. Hanslok's music comes right from the soul! He truly is the Lord of Music and a good family man as well. No raping here. So roark, I think it is time for you to step back and reassess. Have a 5-Hour Energy drink, mull things over and get back to me. I await your reply.

Dearest Steve,

OK, Hanslok's skill with bhajan is heart-rendering, and stunning, and I totally see your point here.  And I was actually going to agree with you, but after a couple of 5-hours, and watching the following video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTLb9VcTeI8

I realized I needed something more in a Guru, even if God so beautifully sings through Hanslok.

Here in the US, after witnessing the daily wisdom, clarity and glory of Trump, I think I may want to fall in line, find a guru that will also 'grab them by the pussy' (which apparently Gurmeet did a little too much of).  But a real man's man guru.  Someone that can arm wrestle, meet ignorance with a fist, fight non-believers with a club, but have luxurious hair and dress beautifully.

We may have to agree to disagree, just a stylistic thing, and I am trying to watch more Fox news to get my head straight, and this may be fueling our divergent perspectives a bit.

M

Hi roark,

This always seems to happen when you and I have a difference of opinion. I start off totally adamant about my point of view, and in just a few sentences you completely turn the tables. This is a gift roark. Don’t hide it under a bushel. Without even saying as much you made me see that I’m a bit old-fashioned. Yeah, I admit it. I can see it now.

The kids these days are full of testosterone. They don’t want to be listening to some mellow “lounge singer” like Hanslok when they can get all jacked up by some macho rapper-type like Gurmeet. Hanslok just sits quietly on stage, singing. He doesn’t wave flags around or punch people, and I can’t imagine him grabbing anyone’s pussy, which I suppose is a good thing. So yeah, a little contrition on my part here roark. I should be a bit more understanding and see both sides. Thanks for the Satsang.

Steve

Steve,

On the other hand, I suppose we could get as many gurus as we can, hedge multiple bets.  A guru for every season, and a guru for every purpose under heaven....

Anyway, this Gurmeet dude, just goes to show how easy it is for the folks that follow these guys to hide their brains beneath bushels (even brains that make frequent use of logical thinking and lead otherwise rational lives).

I will leave you one one more missive about this guy, but check out the rationale evident in some of the quotes from his devotees that are convinced of Gurmeet's divinity!

"If you're a human being--you can be seduced. And that's what cults are all about--seduction. Becoming enthralled. People join cults because they fall in love with a beautiful dream. They see something they desperately want or need. They feel like they've found 'The Answer' to life's problems. If you're capable of falling in love, you're capable of joining a cult."

So true, Steve. If any of us are still beating ourselves up for being seduced, we need to let it go. We are human beings and we wanted something beautiful in our lives. And we wanted answers to important questions.

It isn't easy. & often a source of profound disagreement, when we, the citizens of the various & different western powers, attempt a mutual understanding of how we got here from there, & which forces, in the present, bear down on & influence our elected representatives.

In the case of India, half a world away, it's not even worth trying. But I'll try anyway...... the utility of the godmen to the political class is their ability to deliver a huge block vote to whichever candidate the godman favours.

The present Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, like many before him, has cultivated these types, but now he's decided he can safely confiscate their assets. Apparently he's a public speaker of great powers of charisma & persuasion. One of those who gets thrown up, at random from time to time, in the history of men.

I suspect he's an arsehole in the greater picture, but if the precedent stands, with 40 dead & the army called out it looks like it will, watch out all you gurus of wealth & fame.

The offshore ones included.

Howdy

Hmmmm, Modi promoting flamboyant Gurus and protecting them whilst they rape, pillage and plunder to gain voting blocks, with no judicial system in place that can counter-balance his political power?  I suppose you'd have to live in the kind of third-world country I live in to be exposed to this dynamic.  But I don't know enough to have a good opinion (above my pay grade), but it sounds a bit extreme, and on the conspiracy side of thinking. On the other hand, Indian politics appear to be pretty freewheeling, with a big mix of 'spiritual' types with legislative powers, so you may be onto something.

For me, the real punch line regarding the Gurmeethead is the endless ability to those in his thrall to continue
to rationalize their authentication of the object of their devotion, under
almost any circumstances (just so fucking familiar, no?).

Not to say that, looking past the obvious tragedy involved, there is not a ton of humor involved.  This guy is insanely funny, in a very noir
sense.
You just can’t make this shit up!

M

BTW, I bet Sasha Baron Cohen could do a great film depicting a modern guru.

This guru voting influence has been going on for a long time, so I don't see it as only a Modi thing. What's new is the prosecution & confiscation of assets. To me that means Modi feels himself to be strong enough to take over, by force majeur in whichever way that operates there, I don't know what to call them.... semi-independent city states....feudal baronies...self-sufficient religious communities. Or a mixture of all of those.

That's a break from the past; so far from thinking he's 'conspiring' with these people, which he & many before him have certainly done, I'm suggesting that he could actually be something of a new broom.

I agree about the devotee mentality, that does seem to have universal application, but I'm unable to offer much in the way of a remedy.

Thanks.  Ali G is/was so brilliant and funny.  [Bole not so much.]  As usual, making fun of real people and going right over their heads with his humour.  However, in the clip, I immediately recognized the rabbi with a beard who says not much, but smirks at the stripper jokes.  Here's who he became (from Wash Post July 2015):

Judge upholds sentence for D.C. rabbi sentenced to prison for voyeurism

he's in prison for six and a half years.   Videotaped women congregants during ritual baths at rich Georgetown orthodox synagogue.  Sued for millions
