I think Rennie Davis should be added to the 2nd list., Maybe one of George Harrison's wives too.

The list signifies nothing unless you subscribe to the cult of celebrity.

ha ha, that is exactly what I thought!

and from Rawat's perspective, celebrities are more likely to want money for endorsing the cult rather than giving money.

That was a pretty harrowing view into the innards of TM.

There was a funny line - where he said he finally got his advanced technique and it was to add 'shri' to his mantra.  still makes me laugh.

I've nothing against fame per se, but this list of people have only celebrity in common, and celebrity doesn't indicate credibility one jot. I guess you must think otherwise.

I put the two lists up to show what a dismal failure Maharaji is when compared to the Maharishi. That was the only reason.

Your Comment: The list signifies nothing unless you subscribe to the cult of celebrity.

My reply: https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/celebrity

[You don’t have to subscribe to the cult of celebrity. A famous person is a celebrity by definition.]

Your response: I've nothing against fame per se, but this list of people has only celebrity in common, and celebrity doesn't indicate credibility one jot. I guess you must think otherwise.

My reply: I do not think otherwise. A famous person is a celebrity by definition. Celebrity doesn't indicate credibility one jot. Never said it did. Never implied it did. I have no idea how you concluded that. Have you ever heard of the Kardashians?

I don't think you can say Rawat is a dismal failure compared to Maharishi because he doesn't have a long list of celebrities.  He wasn't the one who attracted the Beatles.  Just timing.

They are both the ones who successfully competed to be head of a cult.

Maharishi would have been middle-aged, at the height of his empire-building powers when the big times came - he was 40 years older than Rawat who was a teenager when he came to the West.

Yes okay, TM is the bigger cult, and more successful business enterprise but, impossible to know for sure, but I am going to guess, seeing as he had that pot of money during the 80's, that Rawat has done extremely well for himself financially.

In terms of family success, openly acknowledged - Rawat 4 children, Maharishi, 0.

hey Steve, I don't like youtube, I haven't watched the video.  but if you are trying to say he was gay i'm not surprised.  and if you are saying he had illegitimate children that wouldn't surprise me either.

Interestingly I heard the other day that the roots of the word genuine are that the 'genu'  bit has the meaning of knee (like genuflect to bend the knee)  - the word genuine comes from the practise of showing the new born baby to the father, when he put the baby on his knee he was declaring it to genuinely be his child.

Hi Steve,

Maharishi was a more financially successful destructive personality cult leader than Maharaj Ji.  TM created lots of corporations that allowed the cult to have control over public image, and, of course, make more money.

A cult is a cult is a cult.  It can consist of two people or two million with a dictatorial leader.  Rawat has decades-long devotees who are quietly very wealthy.  Maharaj Ji is more interested in sucking more money out of fewer followers than becoming famous.  $850K a month ain't chicken feed.

Interesting list, though.    I hope you're well,

Cynthia

This topic is important not so much as to show what celebrities have had an interest in meditation, etc... but rather who offers recognition to a Spiritual Teacher that one has spent time with and/or practiced their teachings.
What modern-day Spiritual Teacher (non-dual, Yoga, Buddhist, etc. etc.) provides a nod of recognition to the time spent as a student of Prem Rawat? As one who often has his finger on this pulse of modern-day "alternative religions", I am not aware of ANY! Yoga teachers always share with gratitude and pride their lineage and past teachers. Buddhist teachers (monk and laypeople) always with love and appreciation recognize their teacher(s). Jewish and Christian priests/rabbis/pastors are always eager to share where they have studied and with who. Pick up any book, look at websites, read some bios and you will see such recognition of lineage in abundance. But you will never see Rawat's name. If any teachers did practice Knowledge for a time, they sure aren't proud of being duped by the Lord of the Universe and you never see such involvement listed. Being on the International scene for as long as Rawat has been, where are his accomplished disciples, where are his enlightened proteges? Such folks that Rawat has been teaching for decades with love (HA-HA) and wisdom (HA-HA), should be going around the globe sharing his message...whatever it is nowadays.
This lack speaks volume to his legitimacy and absence of Spiritual Wisdom. Why don't the premies around him see this? I know why we didn't see it in the 70s...but today, in 2017,  it is glaring brighter than a million suns...that this guy is a fake, phoney, fraud.

Academics get a reputation by being cited by other academics.  It's essential to pursue it if you want to make a living.

Same for spiritual/yoga teachers - you cite other teachers to give yourself credentials.

When Rawat was 'Guru Maharaj Ji' he did it too, I remember at the Alexander Palace event there were larger than life size portraits of past perfect masters lining the length of the hall.

There was Buddha, Jesus, Guru Nanak.. I'm pretty sure Mahomet and Krishna were included.

Putting yourself up as the living perfect master, I guess you can only gain credentials by aligning yourself with very large dead ones.

Thank you for this howardyang!  So true, and I'm grateful actually.  A person I really love and respect, with admirable musical talent and lovely ideas about the world puts out a monthly newsletter...she's not 'Hollywood famous' but she's certainly well known in her circles, small town music scenes...award winning song writing etc...and not too long ago she referenced a story from her ashram days to make a point...and mentioned her "old spiritual teacher, Guru Maharaji"...and I almost threw up.  It really was like a punch in the gut.  I really like the awareness that that doesn't happen very often...I'm super glad the guru is not given credit for people's super fame!

Thanks for helping me keep him small.
Love, Genny
