I was wondering if any other ex-premies ever got caught up in any other cults, Eastern or Western, before or after leaving Rawat. I wonder if we have a psychological profile that makes us vulerable to cults, in the same way as some for drugs, or some get into abusive relationships. I was in a different cult than DLM back in the 70's, then around 2001, I fell for Rawat for two years as an aspirant. Anyone else ever have this happen? Anyone fall for other gurus after leaving Rawat?

as far as I know.

Of course you won't see them here, unless they're out of the other cult !

I've always been amazed by that phenomenon whilst I was involved. I know several examples - people I knew quite well, including several ex-ashramites of the old days.

Plus quite some made their own cults !!

That makes me feel better that I'm not the only one. I guess that some of us are searching for something bigger than what we see in the "mainstream" religions. I remember meeting with the Hare Krishnas, the Forever Family, and the Children of God. Now, I'm a universalist and do not see my self as ever getting involved in any other such groups.

Quite a few premies in South East Queensland left Elan Vital for New Age healing trips in the 1980s especially when Elan Vital activities were at a low ebb.

One even became quite famous as a guruess of breatharianism until exposed on natiOnal TV as a fake.

Don't forget the multi level marketing game which is mostly indistinguishable for a cult apart from the elnightenment being the ability to lease an expensive car. Herb-alife and other nutritional supplements went through here like wild fire - "Use you circle of influence" was their catch phrase.

Those MLMs were pretty well after my time though I stil remember the "Gold Rush" chain letter of the early 1980s. When I pointed out to one premie that you could only make money out of a chain letter at somebody else's expense and that at most of the people involved would lose their money he replied, I'm OK I've got in early.

The daughter of a premie told me recently that MLMs and get rich quick schemes are still rampant in Rawat world.

Yup, the Premie get-rich-schemes were quite pathetic

What about the water purifier deal?  Wasn't Raja Ji a benefactor of that?

I remember meeting a young women from Los Angeles once and I asked her what she did for a living and she replied that she sold water purifiers.

Yeah, I bet that lasted a long time.

The fact is that a lot of premies didn't take care of themselves by going to college and sticking with a job long enough to turn it into something real because they had to quit so often to follow Maharaji around the globe every two months or so.

Define "cult." Would it include non-religious organizations and systems like Lyndon LaRouche or "anarcho-syndicalism's" guru?

I wonder if we have a psychological profile that makes us vulerable to cults, in the same way as some for drugs, or some get into abusive relationships.

I've suggested that's the case, but lots of people disagree. At most it's a trend thing, and doesn't apply to everyone. It's a plausible theory.

Hi Juan,

I wonder if we have a psychological profile that makes us vulerable to cults, in the same way as some for drugs, or some get into abusive relationships.

Actually, there are some cult experts who would agree with you on this issue and I'm inclined to agree, to a certain extent.  In the book Captive Hearts, Captive Minds by Madeline Tobias and Janja Lalich, the authors use the terms "cult leader" and abuser in a relationship quite interchangeably to describe the dynamics between someone who has undue control in a relationship, such as a cult leader or say, a spouse batterer or other controlling persons in any relationship.

Also, recently Rick Ross came out with a DVD called "In the Name of Love:  Abusive Controlling Relationships."  I haven't reviewed it myself, so I can't speak for it personally, but it does look interesting.

Rick Ross is a very controversial person in the world of cult experts, by hey, he's a brave guy, sticks his neck out, and wins the lawsuits against cults, so he's okay in my book, even though cults love to hate him...
