Maharaji cannot properly be called a charlatan or a con-man (although I do believe he can be called a carpet-bagger) because that would give him too much credit. He is in fact not capable of that level of cleverness. Its not that he is too stupid to be a conman – no, its something else.Maharaji is like a book that upon reading itself and finding itself unutterably dull, closes its own cover and declares its unread humbuggery a “mystery” – unable to deal with the crushing understanding of its own mediocrity.
Henceforth, it becomes a tenet of its own faith that “literalness” or that which corresponds closely to detail and rigorous observation is not of value, and in fact is contemptible.
He is not a charlatan because his con is a con on himself – he is in a state of desperate denial.
