Whether you lost one year or 30 to the cult you had a loss. I am sure Joe's post was not meant to invalidate anyone's feelings of loss. 

It is a little like comparing a miscarraige to a stillbirth to a loss of child........all are awful.  Perhaps generally lives are more devastated by the latter, but that in no way suggests the painfulness and reality of any loss is not important.
