This is nothing new for premies.  Back when Rawat was being God publicly, we had the same problems with the negative impression he gave to our employers and family members.

Saying something is "malicous," or "libel" or "drivel" doesn't mean it isn't true.  Of course, my understanding of the unfortunate state of libel law in Australia is that "truth" is not an automatic defense to libel as it is in the United States.

But as you and Candy point out, neither Rawat nor the cult has ever brought a libel action against any ex-premie, and certainly not John McGregror.

The real reason they were upset is that Rawat and the cult functioned below the radar screen for 20 years, and many people didn't associate IRCC, Rawat, or followers of Rawat with the Lord of the Universe, and didn't know about, for example, the feet -kissing ceremony going on behind security fences at Amaroo.  These and related revelations upset their apple carts, causing them embarassment, and perhaps the need to provide answers to inconvenient questions.

And there is another important point.  Many premies interact with people who have no clue they are premies, and the premies never tell them.  They don't want people to know.  Further, many ex-premies don't reveal their identities, not because they don't want people to know they are out of the cult, but they don't want people to know they were ever in the cult in the first place.  In that sense, many premies and ex-premies share the same embarassment.
