My understanding is that the term "Brahman" corresponds to the objective world, classical space/time so to speak. "Atman" means the sensorium, the world considered as experience. I just confirmed this by a quick google on "atman".I think these notions can seem difficult, far-out and exotic to many of us, just because the Abrahamic religions (meaning Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) are largely silent on the subjective/objective puzzle, although it is a staple of philosophy.
