You fetishise individual freedom and choice and leaving the balance of the economy to the market, without apparently seeing the devastation this short-sighted approach has resulted in. Your individual freedom is now curtailed by this virus, your choices limited, and many many businesses will fail entirely unless they are supported by their government. It's just a fact of life, not something imposed on you progressives. And looking for a way out of this, it would be lunacy to continue along the same track. Continue to allow the wet markets and wildlife markets to exist as they do in the east? Shall we allow those customers their freedom? Our whole approach to food and farming needs examining. One country's freedom to feed antibiotics routinely to their cattle as a growth enhancer is the rest of the world's problem dealing with the inevitable antibiotic resistance. That problem is coming down the road, not at all suppressed by our current difficulties.

I don't believe the virus came from a lab. It could have done, and needs investigating, but I doubt it. Sure they covered it up at first. Not good, not good at all. I wonder if they've successfully covered up outbreaks in the past - outbreaks don't help their economy, and they like their economy growing too.

So yes, I think they are culpable, but not much more than Trump and Johnson and others, who barely reacted and just suggested it was like flu, and that our health systems would cope. There was plenty of information around to counter that approach, but they didn't listen. Somehow they didn't see it coming. I sold my shares at the end of February and started social distancing on the 2nd of March. I'm not Nostradamus. I just paid attention. Johnson was shaking hands with Corona virus victims, and allowing gatherings of 250,000 and going on and on about how our health care system is the best in the world.

I think there's plenty of culpability to go round, and your focus on China is predictable. You're always looking for someone to blame. I guess that's your job.

“There’s been nothing like the misinformation and incompetence we’ve seen around Covid-19 in American history. Colleagues of mine overseas are in disbelief. I never thought I would long for the days of Richard Nixon, but here we are. It’s frightening,” he added.
