From the Age of the Guru to the Age of the Friend Recently a guru admitted to me, "You know, when I stopped believing that I was enlightened and others weren't, all the fun went out of giving satsang!" The age of the guru is over. This is the age of the friend. The message of self-knowledge and liberation is outstripping any guru's ability to contain it. People have been discovering that the message is independent of the messenger. The message has become detached from its older, exclusivistic, privileged stage settings. No longer must it travel down from a hierarchy. These days the message of liberation spreads horizontally from person to person. It moves more like an ocean than a waterfall. It grows more like a rhizome than an oak tree. Of course there are still gurus. There will be gurus as long as there are friends. There will always be some gurus able to serve as wonderful teachers and inspiring examples. But these days the friend is providing more and more of the same services. The friend is spreading the message of self-knowledge, opening hearts with lovingkindness, and inspiring others with enthusiasm.

I often tease my still practicing, too old to quit buddies about switching. I suggest that a transition is healthy. I think they got dug in pretty deep, when I start whining " But you betrayed the mother of creation" OOps that's that politician in India. With 3 to choose from, shuffle the deck, high card wins. It aggravates me that my friends can be so self centered,. " Yes he has brought peace to the world because I feel it" I love them too much to push it too much, plus, it's probably futile. Seems to me you that if you love your friends so much, you would get the knowledge yourself and 'give it a chance' and see why your friends are so enamoured. Then your relationship would be more honest and less patronising, as would theirs.

my suggestion... I would steer clear of ANY blatantly narcissistic personalities and revel in the clarity of seeing things as they are without the hindrance of hypnosis and belief system restructuring that inevitably is there to funnel your emotional, mental, physical, financial and time resources to the ever hungry guru and his beleaguered entourage. If anyone spouts platitudes it is him and then the hypnotised sheep follow by repeating it. I agree that the peace felt through hiding ones head under a blanket everyday is the most unlikely method for bringing world peace ever. what would it matter if we all meditated 5 hours a day? still nothing would happen, no social change, multi national corps would continue their rampage of the planet and we would be just toooooo cooooool to care, just platitudes and deepening selfish awareness that separates one from another, fiercely defending our right to a serotonin hit over work, family, political activism, saving the planet and yes world peace... there is no future in that path , except for the business man called prem. Even that is dwindling ,the methods he has used in the past (constantly updating) need another overhaul because he is looking more and more irrelevant with every passing year. I would never advise anyone to delve into the techniques he preaches as his own or anything else he or any other guru spouts as 'the answer'. Remeber the advertisement for coke/ It's the real thing, blablablabla BLAH. Spin, pure spin. I disagree with taking heroin, i have never tried it, and anyone who would advise me to try it before i form an opinion about that for myself I would regard as a drug dealer. Auggie, you're doing great and your friends are lucky to have you. You are even luckier to have seen through the charade as it played out with your former girl friend and the way that it influenced her behaviour. Be who you are, even as the sheep are hypnotised into thinking they are lions. I know your real despair is you can't wake them up or break the spell. It's an absolute miracle that any of us got out of there with any semblance of self. These pages are a testament to that struggle. We are happy you are here among us because you have a bond with your friends and you are trying to see a way to break the hold of the narc relationship they are in. All power to ya

I told my boss about the defection when I first read it, she vehemently denied it. I got the feeling she was quite threatened by the news, thus didn't want to accept it. I recall several years ago them going over to Montreal to hear M's brother I'm guessing that would have only been him. They would just blame suicides on normal instability, if that isn't a contradiction. I'm anxious to recite some of the recently posted Blue Aquarius lyrics as the denial of the thing being a religion sure doesn't stand up well.I often think of your question a while back "did you ever lie for M"? Sad but true.

The sad thing is we never saw it as lying.... we were protecting M (and our fragile belief system) from those who couldn't possibly understand.... we were protecting those who couldn't possibly understand as well somehow, although I'm not sure how that worked exactly. we were somehow serving him by keeping out 'darkness' and doubt and holding true to the belief that his efforts for peace in the hearts of the premies was the most important thing in the world. As if. It's a very romantic and poetic notion born of a caste system in India mixed with the age of romanticism that the west suffers from. Yes we need hope but not in things that do not bear the fruit of that hope in the real world. The amount of money spent flying around the world with mistress in tow could be better allocated to those in need of some real world sustenance in my humble opinion. The grandiose lifestyle is just unnecessary for someone who purports to be enlightened. What a load of flapping around premies go through to get to sit in a hall for an hour to hear him repeat ad infinitum the half truths and spiritual illusions - literally the hypnosis that has made him a wealthy and unnecessarily proud man. He will be forgotten before long, future generations will not honour his name. Jesus walked among the people and his humility and mercy towards those that he came across that were suffering of real world ailments spoke to his mastery of love of humanity. So more than 2000 years later everyone knows his name. I'm afraid prem cannot hope for such a legacy, not least because he has changed his mask so many times and each incarnation of his charity and distribution of wealth back to him company, as well as the name by which he is known, the clothes , the devotional rhetoric, each new incarnation dreamt up by his public relations team is completely disconnected from the last! he is as slippery as a snake. His complete lack of integrity is lost on the premies, they will lie for the so called master without ever knowing they are lying because they have put him above their own integrity. the road to hell is paved with good intentions....

I ran some of that by my very good buddy, the husband of my best friend and his analogy was "did you ever lie to your parents telling them you were doing homework and went to a movie"? He also speaks of the past as the dark ages when the holy family all had divine characteristics. I try to point out that you just spent a bundle going to Amaroo again, when no one would do that if there wasn't some worship going on. when I pointed out that you could just watch a tape of that program, the answer is "it's not the same as live" Uh huh.

I'm not quite getting the analogy of the dark ages with the whole of the holy family having divine characteristics? those two statements seem incongruous... what could be dark about divine characteristics? if they were indeed divine and... well, wtf is he talking about? Mata ji and Bhole ji and Raja ji and Durgha ji (marolyn) and the 4 kids , which characteristics in particular? how did he know about this? And how did he know they have lost the divine characteristics? at what stage did they disappear and become mere mortals who bribe each other to switch teams. Is that behaviour not more of an indication of the dark age upon us? Yes by the way I lied to my parents, however I knew it was wrong, but then once I was an adult i stopped doing that because they weren't standing in my way. and then if they didn't like the truthful answer to a question I told them not to ask me if they didn't want the truth. about M though I lied to them by omission. I just didn't bring to light the things I knew would be a red flag. Darshan, donations etc etc. neither did I even mention any of this to various therapists, it just never occurred to me, it was like my secret life, I might have mentioned that I meditate. Like a badge of honour. The fact that my hearts desire was to fly around the world after a guru was something only premies understood. If my friends questioned me , knowing I was going to see the guru, i would add that I also had this very important meeting or some other thing that was justifiable in world terms because I din't want them to think i was a fanatic. However it never occurred to me that therefore I was seeing myself as a fanatic somehow to even feel the need to defend with a fib. The statement of the dark ages and the divine characteristics of the holy family reminds me of my divided self as a premie. Nothing that couldn't be solved with a giant dose of critical thinking but that was almost forbidden. Marking time in the same spot, over and over again.

I think what my friend meant by the dark ages was a combo of a referral to how long ago that was and simple embarrassment as to the absurdity. With me being only 51, he added that a lot of strange things happened in that era. He even has joked a little about it. One day at work I told about the 5 hour energy drink and Bhol ji, and he said that "he invented music" The sad part is to realize how odd those days were, that you still raise money and blow tons to go. Another old friend likes to fondly recall the beauty of getting squirted with colored water in Florida, but that glow sounded a bit like missing younger days in general. The overall message I get when confronting them with the past is how wonderful things evolve. I hate to admit it, but they are all seemingly hopeless to escape. thanks again for your wonderful insight. I'm dying with curiosity to know if any of my friends snoop on here. I do hope there are some that do, surely. It is always my hope that more will get free and come out. I mentioned to him the divine characteristics, as in Satpal being Jesus, mother of creation, all those fuzzy titles. I guess those who stuck around when they had the split feel that those divine characteristics disappeared for most of the family.

broadcast reports that document the abuses of the group/leader. - Followers feel they can never be "good
enough". - The group/leader is always right.
- The group/leader is the exclusive means of knowing
"truth" or receiving validation, no other process of discovery is
really acceptable or credible.
