I don't think you can say Rawat is a dismal failure compared to Maharishi because he doesn't have a long list of celebrities.  He wasn't the one who attracted the Beatles.  Just timing.

They are both the ones who successfully competed to be head of a cult.

Maharishi would have been middle-aged, at the height of his empire-building powers when the big times came - he was 40 years older than Rawat who was a teenager when he came to the West.  

Yes okay, TM is the bigger cult, and more successful business enterprise but, impossible to know for sure, but I am going to guess, seeing as he had that pot of money during the 80's, that Rawat has done extremely well for himself financially.

In terms of family success, openly acknowledged - Rawat 4 children, Maharishi, 0.
