Ashutosh Maharaji is actually one-time Mahatma Vedpraktanand, who was one of Rawat's early saffron mahatmas in the West. He indulged in sexual activity, and was forcibly put on a plane back to India from Heathrow, London, in which I was involved. Those of us who knew him in the early 1970's can just see the resemblance with Karen's picture, if you substract the beard and thirty-five years.

He tried to go to Bal Bhagwanji (Satpal, Rawat's elder brother) who had then recently separated from our own Prempal Rawat. Satpal told him he could stay, but he had to renounce his mahatma-ship and do penance. Vedpraktanand did not like this, so he went to other weird Hindu groups, got 'enlightened', and emerged out of the forest as 'Ashutosh Maharaj' and set himself up as guru.

The reason I know so much about this is because I happen to be having an email thread with some Ashutosh and Satpal ex-followers in India, who have told me much. I even have documentary evidence - passport scans and so on.

I am told that some of his sannyasi followers have taken an extreme vow to meditate until he comes back. So maybe they will get frozen in samadhi too.

But none of us reading here will be surpised at all the crazy stuff that gurus and their followers can get up to. Believing your dead guru is in a frozen samadhi state is nothing compared to believing your guru is Lord of the Universe and gives you his grace when you meditate.
